Lila: An Inquiry Into Morals by Robert M. Pirsig

After having split ways for a day in New York, Pirsig returns to his boat to find Lila given over to a psychotic episode. Overall, a fantastic work, due for a re-read soon.

Ppirsig is that second book, recently republished, that has prompted him to talk to me now. That was the homer, over the fence, that ended the ball game. But it explored real and tangible struggles esp relationship between father and son. It sorts out the past; it sorts through the possible futures.

I found myself disagreeing with some things Pirsig was saying and I questioned whether it was because he robery wrong, or if it was something I just wasn’t able to grasp yet. Pirsig wants to create a new understanding of morality, of good, and his arguments are often convincing, if confusing. Leaving the book for days or weeks at a time makes it hard to follow that strand and keep a sense of how the ideas you’re reading about tie into the overall purpose of the book. Had higher expectations coming from zen and the art Pirsig claims traditional objectivity renders the field ineffective.

Review: Lila by Robert M. Pirsig

This book is as engaging and compelling as Zen. Does it stand up scientifically? Robert Maynard Pirsig was an American writer and philosopher, mainly known as the author of pisrig book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: But we also need to be free to seek, to obtain what we need to live, and to live well, and to be individually who we need to be. This is because once lirsig new level of organization is created on top of an old one, that new level, while dependent on the level beneath it, will have its own goals and aims that are not necessarily in line with its foundation.

His idea of the Dynamic Quality—which is contrasted to static patterns—apparently, draws a lot from Whitehead whose philosophy maintained that each moment is a creative thrust into novelty.

Zen Buddhism recognizes this fact and warns us not to mistake our verbal approximations for the truth. What could this possibly mean? I have money, fame, a happy wife, our daughter Nell. But near the middle of the book there is a light drizzle and then a torrent of classism and a touch of veiled racism. Pirsig is clearly going for a similar effect in Lilbut it’s not as successful. Sold 5m copies worldwide. He divides these values into four sets of static patterns inorganic, biological, social, and intellectual that form the basic structure of the world and of human society, and into something that he calls Dynamic Quality, which is the force of change or breaking down of static patterns and is identified with religious mysticism, society-changing technological development, cutting edge science, or life-changing personal growth.

In LILA, there is some very rough slogging.

This story begins just outside of Manhattan where solitary Pirsig, sailing down the Hudson River on a trip to Florida, finds himself as the ferryman for Lila, a young and confused woman to whom he is simultaneously attracted and repelled.

Die falschen Thesen zur falschen Zeit. As Ribert becomes more unstable, Pirsig is better able to connect with her. Lila: An Inquiry Into Morals

All verbal constructs are illusory even this sentence. Pirsig argues that the main feature of life in the 20th century is the attempt by intellect to dominate robeft. His presentation of Quality as the best method of understanding the universe starts as proof by assertion and constant repetition, but if one sticks with the book, he does slowly build a justification and defense for his position and provides interesting bits of analysis that I found valuable even if I didn’t buy his overall framework.

In Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: This is familiar terrain. This notion of Dynamic Quality -Pirsig’s consideration and definition of the concept is where Lila: Alongside that, I say, as he describes that time with some fervour, I guess there was some depression setting in?

Read it Forward Read it first. More so than in the previous book Pirsig directly tackles the question of what his philosophy means for human morality and human behavior. Without static quality the organism cannot last. It is the same in what Pirsig puts forward. An Inquiry Into Morals purports to take the reader. In Lila Robert M. Pirsig recasts physical laws as inorganic static patterns of value and the behavior of biological organisms as organic static patterns of value, while making an interesting argument that higher-level patterns like biological patterns or human social patterns are not simply emergent behavior from inorganic static patterns phyiscal laws.

I was walking li,a the post office near home and I thought I could hear voices, including my own. If you stare at a wall from four in the morning till nine at night and you do that for a week, you are getting pretty close to nothingness.

Zen was that seed.
