The narrator keeps her female ancestor’s history alive through her stories. Dnticat was set in the Caribbean, written by a Caribbean author and mostly women were at the center piece of the stories.

If only short stories had it so easy. You could probably find it on youtube. These women all cook when they feel the need to express their sorrows and pain, but the narrator chooses to write despite her mother’s disapproval.

I love how they were interconnected, but each stood on its own. At times I found the book difficult to read because the stories were so graphically brutal and painful, but I believe it is a must read for anyone who would like to better understand the edwidfe of Haitian historical memory. Statements consisting only of original research should be removed. To subvert such persistent gall requires continual regrounding of what is the usual, what is granted, what is the destiny and what is the choice.

The despair is also felt by the mother in “Caroline’s Wedding” when she attends a mass for refugees, who like Celianne in “Children of the Sea” died at sea.
