The ending was a little confusing and vague though Freddie wintef a deeply engaging, sympathetic character. Sadly, the length of this book seemed unnecessary to me, not enough was going on.

I love her writing style! By the time dawn breaks, Freddie will have unearthed a tragic mystery that goes back through the centuries, and discovered his own role in kats life of this old remote town. I found it all very absorbing and was delighted by the ghostly experience at the heart of the story. Sad but hauntingly beautiful, written tale, following the journey of a hurting soul.

There are questions that cannot be easily answered if at all and Mosse communicates her themes through History. In short, an unsatisfying read and lacking in suspense which is a must if winyer are writing a ‘ghost’ story.

You can feel the weight of his bereavement and his self loathing at being the one to survive and not being able to master his emotions and move on.


One cannot go wrong, reading anything by Kate Mosse. As with the Labyrinth, the caves allowed whole communities to hide from persecution and death–to a point.

I’m not ashamed to admit it had me bawling at the end. Having worked as a mental health professional, I feel a special empathy when reading about those who have or who are experiencing mental illness symptoms.
