A local Green Party councillor Andrew Cooper has been working on a policy to introduce Passivhau as a requirement on any land sold by Kirklees council. Airtight measures include west plaster ddnby applied inside the walls, minimising shrinkage between wall and floor and use of airtightness tapes and membranes. Another airtightness tape was used to seal the gap between the window and the plywood box.
In manufacture it uses a high content of recycled glass bottles and requires less overall energy consumption than some alternative products, resulting in less carbon emissions. Glass mineral wool was specified over rigid insulation to ensure a tight thermal fit.
Whatever we do to it, the house runs along performing perfectly, hour after hour, day after day, year after year. Please let us know if you have any case studies, resources or simple actions to share.

It optimises heat from the sun and Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery MVHR provides constant fresh air and helps retain the heat inside the house.

We think it could grow exponentially from now on…. It has super insulation and triple glazing on windows passichaus doors combined with insulated timber frame all help to retain heat.

What really needs to happen is for Passivhaus to be used for social housing. Although not a requirement of Passivhaus design, addressing thermal bypass — by reducing air movement through or around insulation — is becoming good building practice.
