It is the hermetic record of a young writer’s struggle with himself and with the form of the novel, a writer who is willing to stubbornly pursue futility rather than succeed on established terms, who is trying to wrestle undiscovered dimensions out of the novel and himself.
Reading this is like being in a dream, or rather, someone else’s dream, or rather, waking up and recounting your own dream, hence it doesn’t make sense much, but I definitely feel it. The desire for a transparent ceiling seems surreal like a fish praying for wings.
Having read The Savage Detectives, the characters and places briefly mentioned in Antwerp, like the campground, create an awareness or context association that reminds me of the novel. This piece fragmented articulation is a lyrical ode to asphyxiated bureaucracy and to countless nolano rebel with transparent dragons.
I recommend reading it in one go, as it’s short enough to do that.
But that would ignore what is most exceptional and moving — and separate — about this novel, which is, at its core, an enactment of failure as test of endurance, courage and loyalty to one’s own originality. I hope this book is in my pocket at the moment of my death.

The other two books I’ve read by him, Chile By Night and Antwwerp, did have a stream of consciousness feel to them but they were not nearly as confusing as this one. I definitely plan on trying to finishand also plan on reading The Savage Detectiveseasily his best-received book so far in the US, and like Nazi Literature containing a strong theme holding the entire manuscript together young wandering South American political rebels, that is ; but for sure from this point on, I’m going to be a lot choosier about which Bolano projects I decide to anttwerp on, a lesson I unfortunately had to learn the hard way in this case.
